Spiritual Significance of Sri Krishna consciousness and kirtan on Janmashtami
Spiritually, Krishna represents the "All-Attractive" supreme consciousness. Derived from the Sanskrit root krish, the name symbolizes the ultimate divine love that captivates and draws all souls. He is revered as the ultimate source of creation, the eternal lover of the soul, and the inner guide residing in everyone's heart.
Lord Krishna is considered the embodiment of love, joy, and divine knowledge. In Hindu philosophy, his appearance on Earth represents the manifestation of divine joy meant to restore dharma (righteousness) and destroy evil. He is revered as a philosopher and teacher, most notably as the speaker of the Bhagavad Gita.
Benefits of Kirtan
Sri Krishna Kirtan is the core congregational spiritual practice of Bhakti Yoga aimed at awakening divine love through the call-and-response singing of God's holy names. Grounded in ancient Vedic texts like the Bhagavad Gita and popularised by medieval saints, kirtan uses sacred melodies and rhythms to cleanse the mind and link the soul directly to the divine.
• Scaffolding for the Mind: Unlike silent meditation, which can be difficult for an untrained mind, the musicality of kirtan engages human senses through rhythm, cymbals (kartalas), and drums (mrdanga) to block out distracting worldly thoughts.
• Purification of the Heart: Chanting acts as a mirror-cleanser for the heart, wiping away sinful desires, material anxiety, and distress.
• Awakening of Pure Bliss: Chanting names like "Krishna" (the all-attractive) and "Rama" (the reservoir of pleasure) evokes an inherent, spiritual joy that transcends material happiness.
Whether you are new to Kirtan or have been walking this path for many years, we would love to share this meaningful and uplifting evening with you.
